How to Convert Sheet Music Images & PDFs to MIDI (OMR)
Use Optical Music Recognition to scan printed sheet music images and PDFs into playable MIDI tracks and editable notation.
The Sheet Music Image to MIDI tool uses Optical Music Recognition (OMR) algorithms to scan photos and PDF images of printed sheet music into playable MIDI files and digital notation. It allows musicians to digitize printed paper scores directly through their browser camera or file uploads.
Quick Start Guide
- Open Sheet Music Image to MIDI at
/tools/sheet-music-image-to-midi. - Upload a clear photo or scanned image of sheet music (PNG, JPG, or PDF).
- The Optical Music Recognition (OMR) engine detects staff lines, clefs, and notes.
- Verify recognized pitch coordinates and accidental markings.
- Export the synthesized MIDI file (.mid) or MusicXML score.
Before You Begin
- Supported Inputs: High-contrast images (PNG, JPG, WebP) or vector/scanned PDFs of printed sheet music (minimum 300 DPI recommended).
- System Requirements: Modern desktop or tablet browser.
- Important Practical Considerations: Clear, high-contrast scans of commercially printed sheet music produce excellent recognition. Wrinkled paper, skewed phone camera angles, low resolution (<150 DPI), or handwritten notation will cause recognition errors.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Open Optical Music Recognition Workspace
Open the Sheet Music Image to MIDI workspace. The tool incorporates an image pre-processing pipeline (binarization, deskewing, staff line removal) and musical symbol classifier.

- Primary Control:
Tool Navigation Bar / Launch Sheet Music Image to MIDI Workspace - Expected Visible Result: The workspace loads with an image dropzone, contrast enhancer, and interactive OMR viewer.
- Musician's Pro-Tip: If photographing sheet music with a smartphone, place the score on a flat table under even lighting to avoid shadows.
Step 2: Upload Clear Sheet Music Scan or Photo
Drag your image or PDF page into the upload box. The engine loads the image canvas and applies an adaptive thresholding filter to convert color or grayscale photos into clean black-and-white binary images.

- Primary Control:
Sheet Music Image Upload Dropzone (.png, .jpg) - Expected Visible Result: The scanned sheet music appears in the viewer with staff lines clearly defined.
- Musician's Pro-Tip: Use the Deskew tool if the sheet was placed slightly crooked on the scanner glass.
Step 3: Perform Optical Staff Line & Note Detection
Click "Process OMR". The engine detects horizontal staff line spacing, identifies clefs (Treble, Bass), locates key signatures, and maps notehead centroids to exact staff lines and spaces.

- Primary Control:
Image Contrast Binarization & Staff Detector Sliders - Expected Visible Result: Colored bounding boxes highlight recognized musical symbols: noteheads (blue), accidentals (green), rests (orange).
- Musician's Pro-Tip: Inspect the bounding boxes to ensure noteheads aren't grouped with accidental symbols.
Step 4: Verify Recognized Pitch Coordinates
Review the recognized notation in the synchronized playback preview. Click Play to audition the recognized notes: the audio synthesizer plays the transcribed score while highlighting notes on the image scan.

- Primary Control:
Recognized Note Overlay Canvas & Audio Playback - Expected Visible Result: Synthesized audio playback matches the musical score depicted in the image.
- Musician's Pro-Tip: If a stray smudge was read as a note, click the bounding box on the image to delete it before exporting.
Step 5: Export Synthesized MIDI Track
Click "Export MIDI (.mid)" to download the parsed musical performance. You can also export MusicXML to open and edit the recognized score in MuseScore or Finale.

- Primary Control:
Download Converted Standard MIDI (.mid) Button - Expected Visible Result: A standard
.midfile downloads to your device, ready for immediate playback or DAW production. - Musician's Pro-Tip: Import the MusicXML file into notation software to easily fix any small rhythmic details or add rehearsal marks.
Practical Real-World Example
Converting an Out-of-Print Vintage Piano Score to Playable MIDI
- Musical Workflow: A pianist found an out-of-print 1920s ragtime piano score in a public library. They scanned the page at 300 DPI, loaded it into BlackRatio OMR, and verified the recognized notes in the playback preview.
- Verified Outcome: The pianist exported the MIDI file, loaded it into their digital piano, and practiced along with the synthesized playback at half tempo.
How to Verify Your Results
- Compare the original sheet music image side-by-side with the recognized piano roll preview.
- Check the recognized key signature and time signature against the printed score header.
- Verify that accidentals (sharps, flats, naturals) on crowded staves were captured accurately.
- Audition playback to confirm note pitches and rest lengths match the original composition.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Accidentals (sharps and flats) are missed on crowded measures.
- Underlying Cause: Low image contrast causing accidental glyphs to merge into adjacent noteheads.
- Recommended Solution: Increase the Contrast slider before clicking Process OMR to cleanly separate adjacent symbols.
Staff lines are broken or faint, causing note pitch detection errors.
- Underlying Cause: Faded photocopy or low scanning resolution.
- Recommended Solution: Re-scan the original document at 300 DPI or higher with pure black-and-white thresholding.
Technical Boundaries & Limitations
Optimized for printed, typeset Western musical scores. Handwritten manuscript scores or lead sheets with cursive lyrics are not currently supported by optical recognition engines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can it read multiple pages of a score simultaneously? A: You can upload multi-page PDF scores; the OMR engine processes each page sequentially and merges them into a continuous multi-measure MIDI file.
